An
Overview of Aluminium Panel Painting
Aluminium
painting panels
are a more recent type of painting support that can be used in place of canvas
or linen. These are thin aluminium panels that have been specifically primed
for painting. Panels for art painting surfaces made of aluminium are relatively
light and quite rigid.
Utilizing
Aluminium Painting Panels: Two Methods
The
two main applications for aluminium painting panels are as follows:
- After priming the surface, paint
directly on it.
- Glued to the aluminium surface is
traditional linen or cotton that has been painted.
PANEL
PREPARATION FOR MOUNTING AND PAINT
Note:
When painting and mounting the panel, only use the coated side.
- To prevent the build-up of static,
slowly and carefully remove the protective film from the coated side.
- For maximum results, pre-clean
the panel surface with ethyl or isopropyl alcohol using a non-coloured
cloth. Avoid using solvents, soaps, or other liquid cleaning products
since they could leave a film residue that interferes with adherence.
Additionally, silicone-containing cleaning products can hinder adhesion
and are not advised. Isopropyl alcohol in a 70% solution is advised as the
sole cleaning agent.
- Use abrasive paper to scratch the
surface, especially one with a grain size of 360. Never grind the coating
all the way through to the aluminium metal.
- With a lint-free cloth dampened
with ethyl or isopropyl alcohol, remove dust.
Painting
Aluminium Panels: Benefits
Many
significant benefits come with painting on aluminium panels. If cost is not a
major consideration, the first two of them make it a wise pick.
Pros
stable despite changes in temperature or
humidity
Changes
in temperature and humidity have very little impact on aluminium painting
panels. In contrast, traditional wood panels and canvases expand and contract
with changes in humidity or temperature, damaging the painting surface. The one
thing that sets aluminium painting supports apart from conventional painting supports
and makes them more archival is this. In most studios where conventional
painting surfaces would warp, you can store them there instead.
Robust
Aluminium
painting panels won't be readily damaged if they are dropped, unlike MDF and
HDF (medium/high-density fibreboard).
Not releasing gases
The
formaldehyde-treated medium and high-density fibreboards do not produce gases
over time, unlike aluminium painting panels.
Exposure won't cause tarnishing.
Due
to its resistance to oxidation, aluminium painting panels can have exposed
parts without tarnishing.
Lightweight
Aluminium
panels are relatively light, making them perfect for transporting huge works of
art. They are heavier than gatorboard panels to which linen has been bonded for
Plein air painting, though.
Cons
Expense
The
cost of aluminium panels is higher than that of MDF and HDF
(medium/high-density fibreboard) panels.
Only
choose the Aluminium
Painting Panels from ARTEFEX if you want a flawlessly smooth, firm,
archival surface to work on.
